When computers or other devices are linked, the text typed by the TypeWell transcriber is sent in real time to the linked reader devices. In some configurations, readers can also type comments that appear to the transcriber.
Depending on the linking method, readers may or may not see each other’s comments.
TypeWell offers several methods to link a transcriber’s computer to one or more reader devices. For example, to allow a reader to view the transcript in a web browser on their own mobile device (like an iPad or smartphone), the transcriber must use a method such as Web Linking or StreamText, which are available in the Premium version of the software.
Enabling linking in the TypeWell Transcriber program
To establish a connection between the transcriber and reader(s), two things must be turned ON in the transcriber’s software.
1. Enable the specific linking method(s)
The transcriber must first activate the linking method they intend to use during that session. To do this, open the Link menu in the TypeWell Transcriber program and click the desired option (e.g., “By Web…” or “By Serial…”). A dialog box will open with any needed setup instructions.
The Link menu with multiple options. “By Web” is selected and marked with a plus sign, indicating it is enabled.
⚠️ It is possible to enable more than one linking method at a time (e.g., Web Linking and StreamText), but this is not recommended unless necessary. Some methods may interfere with each other or cause unexpected output. If you’re unsure which linking methods can be used together, contact us for guidance.
2. Turn on the master linking control
This step is often overlooked! At the top of the Link menu, click "Linking On" to activate the master control. This turns linking on for all selected methods.
The master linking control is highlighted and turned ON.
Confirming a successful link
Once the transcriber is successfully connected to one or more reader devices, the Link menu label will change to "Linked".
The Link menu now displays “Linked,” indicating an active connection.
